Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Zakâh?
"The fourth pillar of Islâm is Zakâh. Zakâh is a Mâlî Ibâdah (a worship fulfilled with wealth) performed annually. Zakâh is to give one-fortieth (2.5%) of one’s wealth annually to one of the eight classes of people specified in Qur’ân Al-Karîm."
The conditions:
"An adult, sane, free and debtless Muslim who is in possession of the Nisâb amount of wealth, in excess of their basic needs for a complete lunar year is obliged to pay the Zakâh."
Ilm Al Hal, P.218What is Nisâb?
"Nisâb is a measure set by our religion for the obligation of Zakâh. The Nisâb threshold is reached when a person owns, beyond their basic needs, 20 Mithqal (80.18 grams) of gold, or the equivalent in money or trade goods."
Ilm Al Hal, P.218Calculation Method:
-The calculation follows the Maghshush rule (مغشوش). -Maghshush means gold or silver that is mixed with a less valuable metal. -An alloy mixed with copper is considered gold if it contains more gold than copper, and silver if it contains more silver. The same method applies when gold or silver is mixed with other substances. -For the benefit of those in need, it is recommended and exemplary to calculate and pay the Zakâh using this method.

Types of Zakâh
Cash
Enter all the cash you hold plus the balances of your current and deposit accounts. Euro, Dollar and Turkish Lira have their own fields; any other currency is picked under “Other Currencies”. Every amount is converted at the day's rate automatically.
Gold
This section covers gold jewellery, bars and coins. Enter 24, 22, 18 and 14 carat gold in grams, and coins such as Quarter, Half, Full, Ata, Reşat, Five and Gremse by the piece. Each line is valued at the current gold price.
Silver
Enter the weight of your silver jewellery and other silver items — dishes, cutlery and the like — in grams. The total is valued at the current silver price.
Bank Savings
This section is for savings contracts such as a building savings plan or life insurance. What counts is not the contract total but the surrender value: the amount you would actually be paid out on the day.
Claims
Record your outstanding claims here: receivables from individuals or companies, secured receivables, repayable securities such as cheques and bonds, short-term refundable deposits, and receivables from tenants. The amounts you enter are added to your total wealth.
Stocks and Market Shares
Shares, funds and ETFs, along with other holdings such as crypto and bonds, are gathered in this section. Each is valued at its market value on your Zakâh day.
Debts
Enter the personal debts you owe in Euro, Dollar, Turkish Lira or any other currency. These amounts are deducted from your total wealth, and the nisab comparison is made against the remaining net figure.
Commercial Assets
This covers your business's cash and bank balances, its trade receivables and its goods held for sale. Office equipment and machinery can be recorded too, but as they are not trade goods the calculator leaves that line out of the total.
Commercial Debts
Enter the debts your business owes here. As with personal debts, these amounts are deducted from your total wealth.
Ushr
Ushr is the Zakâh of agricultural produce. Each harvest can be added separately with its name, weight in kilograms and price per kilogram. Produce watered naturally — by rain or river — is charged at one tenth (1/10), and produce watered through labour or expense at one twentieth (1/20). Produce subject to Ushr includes wheat, barley, rice, millet, onions, potatoes, hazelnuts, tea, melons, cucumbers, eggplants, clover, olives, sesame, honey, manna, sugarcane, and all types of fruit.
